Advantages of SPACECOOL

The Dual-Function Cooling System:

  • Solar Reflectance (~95%): This function acts as a near-perfect shield against the sun. By reflecting 95% of incoming solar energy (visible and near-infrared light), the material drastically suppresses heat gain before it happens.

  • Infrared Emissivity (~95%): This is the active cooling mechanism. The material converts internal heat (and heat from the object it covers) into infrared radiation.

Heat Transfer to Outer Space Utilizing the Atmospheric Window Wavelengths

The material actively converts accumulated surface heat into infrared light specifically tuned to the 'atmospheric window' (8–13 μm). This unique range of wavelengths allows thermal energy to slip through the Earth's atmosphere without being absorbed or reflected back. As a result, the heat bypasses the air entirely and radiates directly into the infinite cold of deep space (-270°C), permanently ejecting it from the environment to provide powerful, passive cooling."

What is the atmospheric window?

The Earth’s atmosphere acts like a filter, interacting with light differently depending on its wavelength. While some frequencies are absorbed and trapped by air and moisture (creating heat), others possess high transmittance, meaning they can pass through the atmosphere as if it weren't there.

To transport heat away from the planet, it must be emitted as light energy within these "open" wavelengths. The most effective of these pathways is the 8–13 μm range, known as the "atmospheric window." By precisely tuning thermal emissions to this frequency, heat energy avoids being blocked by the atmosphere and travels unimpeded into the cold void of outer space.

Differences from Conventional Heat-Shielding and Thermal Insulation Materials

Conventional thermal insulation and heat-shielding materials only reduce the amount of solar heat entering a room; they do not provide any cooling effect.

In contrast, SPACECOOL not only suppresses solar heat gain but also actively radiates indoor heat into space, enabling daytime cooling with zero energy—something impossible with traditional technologies.
